Hey folks.

After being on the road for the past 3 months shooting and editing my new doc on the band FISHBONE, I'm back in Fog City, USA and ready to again rock the Red Vic Moviehouse on Haight Street, as our documentary, PLAGUES & PLEASURES ON THE SALTON SEA, has been invited for a return enagement this Tuesday - 8/1, Wednesday - 8/2, and Thursday - 8/3.

Yes, it's another one of those e-mails, as our little film is fast becoming a cult hit on the festival and theatrical scene. Heck, we're at 25 Best Documentary Awards and counting, so we want you to come out and join in the fun of a movie and beers on Haight Street. Or if you're busy, have seen the film, or just whatever, invite your friends, neighbors, and strangers to come on out. I know, I know, this is a lot of shameless self-promotion from me, a supposedly humble person, but I'm looking to have some fun up on Haight Street and help my favorite movie theater sell some popcorn, so what else am I going to do but throw the invite out to you all.

Keep on truckin'.
Dirs. Chris Metzler and Jeff Springer US 2005 (video: 71 min.)

Plagues and Pleasures is a feature documentary directed by Chris Metzler & Jeff Springer, with narration by legendary counterculture filmmaker John Waters and music by the southwestern, alt-rock supergroup, Friends of Dean Martinez.

Once known as the California Riviera, the Salton Sea is now called one of America's worst ecological disasters: a fetid, stagnant, salty lake, coughing up dead fish and birds by the thousands. Yet a few hardy eccentrics hang on to hope, including a roadside nudist waving at passing European tourists, a man building a religious mountain out of mud and paint, beer-loving Hungarian Revolutionary Hunky Daddy, and the real-estate Ronald McDonald known simply as The Landman. Through their perceptions and misconceptions, the strange history and unexpected beauty of the Salton Sea is revealed.

Plays with short, LSD-A-GO-GO (Dir. Scott Calonico, 10 min.)

Director Chris Metzler will be present at evening screenings for Q&A.

Showtimes: Tues & Thurs: 7:15, 9:15; Wed: 2:00, 7:15, 9:15

Tickets: $8 for evening screenings, $6 for 2:00 matinees, $4 for seniors and children at all times. Tickets go on sale 20 minutes before each screening at the Red Vic box office.

Sadly, my 89 Ford Probe GT was stolen from right in front of my house in West Berkeley sometime last night (Friday) between midnight and 7:30am. As it's a pretty distinctive car, I thought it was worthwhile to send out a couple of pictures in case anyone sees it. The license plate is 4JMX-985 and it has a gray interior (when it was taken, it had a dark green towel and some dog leashes in the back seat). I'm really hoping someone took it out for a joyride and it will end up being found abandoned somewhere.

indeedo, my pretties - Aug 18th is the deadline, and 200's the capacity, which we're rapidly creeping up on.

go to http://www.rednosedistrict.org for the facts. camp dues are $100 per person. if you choose to join, sign up under the Gooferville subcamp when prompted.

some background:
after last year's Burning Man, it occurred to me that it'd be cool to bring some of the disparate circus camps and talent together for 2006. i talked with my pal Jesster (she runs the EnHightened Beings of Leisure stilter camp) about it and thus did the ball begin to roll.

Jess knew of a couple gents who were interested in going big this time around as well, and managing the infrastructure buildout for what has become the Red Nose District circus camp. so in January, we got together with'm and friends from Cirque Berzerk (they had the big top at 2:00 last year) for a marathon planning weekend, and the Red Nose District was hatched.

since then, we've been joined by Vau de Vire, Xeno, the Now camp, and a bunch of other yahooze. and we've been building, fundraising, coordinating, etc., ever since as well.

some salient RND features:

- we've got 300' of Esplanade frontage between 7:00-7:30; mainly public space, with a whole second block behind us for camping only.
- we've got our own showers (with pressurized hot water) and portapotties
- indoor and outdoor performance spaces, complete with full sound, lighting, and aerial support
- we've got the Cirque Berzerk big top, the French Quarter cafe/chill tent, the Vau de Vire Playground (with Michael Christian's Hypha structure from last year as its centerpiece), Kasia Wojnarski's Burning Tree sculpture, the Do Lab's Flower (roving giant flower from last year) and Flytrap (new this year), Prof. Violet and Polly's Peepshow Minigolf complex, the EnHightened Being's High Chair Stilt Bar, and the public/private Nome, a roughly 60'x60' kitchen/lounge/green room/costumery tent...and, of course, the Gooferville Midway with games, a dome-enclosed trampoline, and other sideshow amenities.
- we've got some of the greatest people on Earth involved with the camp
- RND's fully participatory - meaning, everyone camping is contributing through performances and taking on camp jobs

our trucks/trailers from LA and San Francisco are only transporting infrastructure stuff due to the massive nature of this beast - so all campers are responsible for getting themselves and their personal belongings, including drinking water, to Burning Man.

check out the Red Nose District site for camp plans, the daily-updated schedule of events, and all the other stuff you'd expect to find. and let me know if you have any questions about it all - talk (at) boenobo (dot) com, or call me.

we ride!

Clowns populate every circus. But clowns strike fear into the hearts of many.

Some Web sites are dedicated to the hatred of clowns. Kids figure it out early.

"Alison, are clowns scary to you?" NBC 10 medical reporter Cherie Bank asked

SURVEY
Are You Or Have You Ever Been Afraid Of Clowns?

"A little bit," Alison said.

"Hally -- she is my cousin -- she's afraid of clowns," one child said.

The No. 1 reason many people are scared of clowns is the movie "It," that came out in 1990.

Granted, the killer clown in "It" is scary, but the fear of clowns has been around forever.

"You can't tell what's going on behind the clown face," said Dr. Linda Welsh, a psychologist.

Welsh said that the expressive nature of body language is all hidden behind a clown's makeup and costume.

"So you often get uncomfortable and don't know how to act -- even anxious and frightened," Welsh said.

But clown organizations know about their scary image and some individual clowns, at least, are trying to do something about it.

"I'm a mommy clown," said Judy Tudy.

Tudy's whole family clowns around. There is Cutie Tudy, Rudy Tudy, Eddie Spaghetti and Brian Bo-bi-an. They are all from the new age of friendly clowns.

"We as clowns have conventions all over the United States and we are working very, very hard at making the clown population better all the time. We have a clown code of ethics. We have certain ways we're supposed to dress. Not smoke tobacco," Rudy Tudy said.

Clowns are working very hard in trying not to appear scary, and for some it is working. They don't see clowns as monsters.

So for Judy Tudy's audience, go on and send in the clowns

Hello GooferFriends,

Thought I'd share with you some photos and video that I took this year. Thanks to a brilliant new digital camera there's not only some gorgeously detailed (5 megapixel) photos, but also a number of video clips with sound, including Slobbering Anus (the two human beatboxing dudes with witch hats on... for me, the surprise hit of the Gooferstage). Take a look for yourselves:

evolution-control.com/tradema.../bm2005/

Three warnings about the video however:

1) You'll need Quicktime, or some other way to view MPEG4 videos (Windows hint: Winamp is NOT your answer)
2) They're big. Seriously... HUGE. Be patient. Dial-up users, abort now.
3) Please be kind and do NOT download a lot of videos simultaneously -- 1 or 2 at a time, please.

Enjoy!

the pretty mylar space blankets are available at r.e.i. for $3.95 a pop. they're gold on one side and silver on the other so you have some aesthetic choices, and they really do make a BIG difference in reflecting some of the heat (they also do help insulate from the cold at night too!). there are plenty of space blanket things around, but r.e.i. is the only place i've seen the gold ones. i've got 20 already (last year i had less than 10) , but i plan on wrapping my van completely inside and out, so i don't know how many i may have left over. i'll share whatever i have left if there's any (there should be). and the most important thing is: do NOT use ANY other kind of tape to stick it up save for the BLUE PAINTER'S MASKING TAPE that you can find usually anywhere they sell paint. it's the ONLY kind that is sticky enough to work but peels away with no residue. regular masking tape both melts and dries out, and duct tap residue will be virtually impossible to remove from any surface after the playa has its way with it. believe me, i spent about 8 hours scrubbing duct tape crap off the van once with a toothbrush and "goo gone", after my first ignorant foray into shininess. and one more thing- if you are planning on using it on a vehicle, be sure to bring regular old aluminum foil to block the windows, the space blankets are actually see-through and do not provide much of a privacy shield, or block the light enough if you're trying to sleep during daylight hours, or reflect as much heat if the light comes in the windows. the mylar does rip easily, so tape it as flat as possible and pretty much edge it all the way round with the tape to keep the wind from picking it up and shredding it.

maybe we should be shiny camp instead of gooferville???? ;}

yay! the shinier the better.....

    Hey Goofervillains, I pulled together this info for GooferSteve but thought I'd share it with other burners. All Electronics is an electronics surplus place which I've bought electronics parts from for years. Apart from their geeky selection of plasma generators and toroid chokes, they have very useful things for burners such as LED flashlights, blinky lights, EL/glow wire, and more, all for cheap surplus prices! They have a full catalog online at:

http://www.alltronics.com/

Below are my picks for this year; I have personally bought and used many of these items.
LED LIGHT SHOW, 20 BARS
CAT# LVL-2
Your Price: $5.50 each

(NOTE: The "LED Stars" below DO NOT come with a power supply -- however, if you get the above lights, you can attach its power supply to the lights below with some fairly simple wiring.)
FLASHING, CYCLING LED STARS (AS-IS)
CAT# STR-8
Your Price: $6.50 each

26 OZ ALUMINUM WATER BOTTLE
$ 3.50 each
CAT# BTL-6

ELECTROLUMINESCENT WIRE SET, RED
$ 19.95 each
MAGNETIC FLASHER, BLUE-RED
$ 1.00 each
CAT# MFL-BR
These are great, small, magnet-backed flashers; stick them on your bike, earlobes, etc. Other colors of flashers here:
This page has lots of cheap LED flashlights -- the LED flashlights use very little battery power and unlike regular flashlights, the LEDs don't burn out:

GOOFERVILLE MEETING  ---  31-Jul-05

Some statistics:
Gooferville address: 9:30 and Esplanade
Estimated Gooferville population for 2005: 40
Trash barrels (for Goofercampers only): 4
Showers: 2
Gooferbudget: $2,400 ($1,200 of which is for the truck)

Layout:
Go to the Gooferville website (www.gooferman.com) for site plans; also keep watching there for a work signup sheet and task list. The front performance/public area will be 60 feet square, with a 20 foot square stage (the stage is identical to last year's). The Gooferville truck will be the back wall of the stage and will separate the public from the private area. The bar will be set up to the left of the stage. There will be a "ribbon roof" over the whole area, about 8 feet overhead. Six lamp poles will outline the area with a 500 watt flood light on each. Everything is powered by one main generator, and there is a secondary generator for our private camp use.

Our private area will be something like last year; go behind the truck and you will enter our main "commons" area with a shaded seating area for Gooferville campers (this is for camp use and is not part of the public area). There will be 4 trash barrels around this area for our private use (the trash will go back on the Goofertruck). Note that this year there is no kitchen... you're on your own for cooking. However water is provided and will be available here in five gallon jugs; these will have pumps in them so you don't have to mess with the sloppy tip-over method. There will also be an evaporation pond for the shower runoff.

Neighborhood:
Our neighbors will be Snowflake Village, The Life-Sized Mouse Trap, El Circo, and I believe Flaming Lotus Girls. Note also that we are one block from the 10 o'clock rave camps... as you well know, they go 24/7 so bring heavy-duty ear plugs (if you plan to sleep, that is).

Schedule:
12-Aug	Gooferville Fundraiser
25-Aug	Truck loading in San Francisco (all day and night)
26-Aug	Truck arrives at Burning Man
27-Aug	Camp construction
28-Aug	Camp construction
29-Aug	Drink heavily
31-Aug	Entertainment (live shows on stage at night; DJing during other times)
01-Sep	Gooferville's main performance/party night
02-Sep	Entertainment
03-Sep	Entertainment
05-Sep	Camp teardown; truck loading
06-Sep	Truck leaves Burning Man
07-Sep	Truck unloading in SF

What can I help with?
Boe and Steve will be doing the majority of the pre-construction starting immediately. Anyone interested to help could do so next weekend (August 5/6); talk to one of them first to see whether there is still work to be done. People will be needed most for truck loading and unloading, and camp construction. People will also be needed for operation of the camp, such as bartending and stage management. A signup sheet and list of work roles will be posted to the website.
The camp also needs circus decor, which you can either create or buy. Think sideshow banners, for example. And get things in red and/or yellow whenever possible.
Do you have a way to get booze at wholesale (or better) prices? We'll be buying a lot for the bar, so any ideas would be great.

------------------

Take a pump pressurized garden sprayer (they sell them at Lowes, Home Despot, etc for pesticides, we will fill ours with plain or acidy water.) I got a 3 gallon size. Take a kitchen sink veggie washer attachment (the hose and the little handle squirty thing that you would plumb into your kitchen sink)
Cut the sprayer attachment off of the garden sprayer, get a brass butt connector and two hose clamps and attach the kitchen sink squirty thing to it instead. What this leaves you with, is a tank that you pressurize by working the hand pump, and once pressurized, you use the squirty thing to deliver water where you want it. Paint the tank black, fill it with water, and once it is warm use it for shower, dishes, ass washing,whatever. It is totally portable, and if you follow the bitch's advice, good for approximately 3 showers with *pressurized water!* yay!

Does anyone have a TV they could bring to the playa?

For those of you who've admitted to your A.D.D., here're the basics of the Prep listing Allison posted last week:

LAST PRE-BUILD DAY: this Sunday, August 22, noon til dark – please show up at Allison & Mig’s to help out if at all possible (or call me to check on progress: 415.377.4465)

HAULING SHIT UP-N-BACK: Most everything’ll go in the truck (water, storage bins, tents, etc.), but there may be overflow. If you can haul your bike up with your own vehicle, please do.

PACKING: Pack whatever you can in lidded plastic storage bins (makes loading the truck much easier); get’m at Home Depot, Target, etc.

AGUA: BM recommends 2 gallons per person per day, which tends to work. We’ll haul all water up in rigid 5-gallon jugs (‘course, you can take more with you on your own if you’d like). More on this soon.

BOOZE (THE OTHER AGUA): For public consumption purposes, please bring two 1.5 liter boozes or a case of beer (of whatever quality) as well as mixers – and extra, quality stuff for your own good, if you’re into that kind of thing.

CAMP MOOLAH CONTRIBUTIONS: If you’re going to be sending anything up in the truck and/or staying within the Gooferville confines, be prepared to kick-down around $65 per person (to help cover related expenses).

LOADING THE TRUCK: We load Friday afternoon, August 27. Please have your stuff to Mig & Allison’s (see map link above) by 2pm that same bat day, or, better yet, earlier. Label it to make distribution easier once we’re Out There.

UNLOADING THE TRUCK AFTER BM: We’ll be unloading on Tuesday, Sept 7, again at Mig & Allison’s joint. Please plan to help out if you can; either way, definitely make sure to retrieve your stuff from their place that night.

SOME OTHER USEFUL INFO:
- DOUBLE CHECK TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR TICKET BEFORE YOU HEAD UP. If you leave it behind, make sure to find around $350 before you get to the BM gates; otherwise, you’re poop outta luck.
- If you’re a driver, pay much attention to the posted speed limits once you leave the freeway outside of Reno. Those roads are patrolled by (Indian) reservation police, and they’ll bust you in a heartbeat if you’re going 16 in a 15mph zone – and fines have to be paid on the spot. For those reasons, it’s a good idea not to be drunk or noticeably high if you’re driving at that point in the adventure.
- Once you’re through the BM gate, we’re located forward and just off to the left. Look (and/or ask) for 7 and Mercury (better yet, mark it in advance on your Burning Man map – www.burningman.com). If you’ve got a multi-band walkie-talkie, I’ll be sending out our channel and frequency next week so you can attempt to reach us when you show up.
- Bring along a spare set of keys (otherwise known as The Belinda Effect)
- For you rookies, make sure to bring a particle mask/respirator and goggles for dust storms – the storms are pretty inevitable and they tend to suck if you’re not prepared. (Also, at the front gate, the Greeters’ll want to spank you if you’re a newbie. If you don’t want to get spanked, lie and tell’m you’ve been before (like I did); if you do like it, bring your own paddle for added pleasurable effect)

For more details, see Allison's earlier FINAL CAMP PREPARATIONS listing.

You should have received an evite for Gooferville @ Burning Man where you can indicate whether or not you are coming, what day you are coming up, and which camp you are planning to camp at (Gooferville or Goofer Heights: GOOFERVILLE is the performance camp, located at the corner of 7 o'clock and Mercury, one block off the Esplanade. Goofer Heights, is our sister “chill camp” site; its location is yet to be determined, but it will be toward the outskirts around 7 o’clock), and answer a few other logistical questions.

JOIN US AT MIG & ALLISON'S HOUSE TO BUILD

We have been working hard during our Sunday sessions to get everything ready, but could use a bit more help. Please feel free to join us on either of the next two Sundays from 1-7 at Mig & Allison's house (address given in a previous email) to get the rest of the infrastructure built for our camp. Yes, you heard right, there are only TWO Sundays left--yikes! We'd like to ask everyone to attend if at all possible on the last Sunday, August 22nd, as kind of a party/send-off meeting to make sure we have everything as ready to go as possible.

CAMP CONTRIBUTIONS/DUES

As those of you who have camped with us before know, we have in the past done a lot of things communally (truck, water, booze, food). This resulted in some people fronting a lot of money, and quite a bit of accounting at the end. To make things easier this year, we've decided to do some of these personal things separately (e.g. food & personal booze).

However, a ton of work and literally thousands of dollars have already been put in by the core group to create the infrastructure & entertainment area for the camp. Additionally, there will be a small crew going up to the playa on Saturday, August 28th who will be building out the camp. For these reasons, we feel that it's fair to ask that everyone camping at Gooferville pay for part of the truck rental and gas for the truck, regardless of whether they use it for their personal items. Although these camp "dues" will be applied directly to (and be calculated directly from) the truck costs, we are suggesting this system to ensure that those of us creating and bringing up the infrastructure don't also have to be the only ones paying for its transport. The shared kitchen, shower, dome (for lounging in the shade), and stage will benefit us all.

We expect everyone's share for the truck rental/gas to be about $65 (maybe less). Additionally, we do not expect anyone camping in Goofer Heights (the quiet camp a few streets back, spearheaded by Krista & Susan W.) to contribute to the Gooferville truck if they are not bringing anything up in it. However, several people camping there have already graciously offered to pay for a share of the truck, helping to defray expenses for the main camp since they would like help out and participate in it. That is what the Burning Man spirit is all about! Thanks very much to you guys.

If anyone on this list camping at Gooferville has a special situation and does not feel like they can help share the truck expenses, please talk to Deb or Allison about it.

BRINGING STUFF IN PERSONAL VEHICLES & BIKE RACKS

We are very excited that our camp has grown more than we expected this year. However, this does make us a bit worried about having enough room in the truck for everything. Although we rented a bigger (25') truck this year, we need to make sure we have enough room for the larger infrastructure we are bringing. For this reason, we'd like to encourage everyone to bring whatever they can up in their personal vehicles. This is an especially good idea if you are coming later, as you will not be there to watch over your things. We don't want anyone to stuff their cars full and be uncomfortable, but if you can take something in your own vehicle, please do. To help with this effort, we'd like to ask everyone taking up a personal vehicle use a car-mountable bike rack and bring up several bikes. Bikes take up the most room in the truck, so this really helps! You can get them for about $5 at Urban Ore in Berkeley (7th & Ashby) and Mig will be happy to go buy them for you or consult with you on their use if you are able to use one. If that's not possible to do in your situation, there is a place on the evite to let us know that you need to bring up a bike on the truck.

BINS

If there are things you cannot bring up yourself and would like to put them in the truck, we will require that you put them in bins. This makes the truck exponentially easier to pack. In the past we have used the clear with red top bins from Home Depot that are about 22" x 15" and 12" high. Though you don't have to use these bins, they are one option. Rubbermaid bins with the sealable tops may be better suited for the desert (less dust can get in). We will accept bins of any size (especially if you need bigger bins to put bigger things in them), but if you can find bins that are about 22" x 15" x 12" for your smaller items, that would be great. The Rule: PUT EVERYTHING THAT CAN FIT IN A BIN INTO A BIN. Tents, lawn chairs, bikes and other impossibilities are obviously exceptions to the Bin Rule.

LAWN CHAIRS

While we're on the subject, we'd like to remind everyone to bring a lie-down lawn chair/chaise lounge. We've learned from past experience that it is almost essential that everyone have one to lounge on during the day. You might also want to bring a cushion for it. I just bought a bunch of these chairs for $5.50 at Walgreen's, and they still have them for about $10 at Long's Drugs on 51st St in Oakland. If you need to buy one, make sure to buy it now because they are out of season and it took me a lot of searching to find them.

WATER

The Burning Man organization recommends that everyone bring 2 gallons of water per person per day (which includes dish, drinking & showering water). We will require that everyone bring up the proper amount of water for themselves in 5 gallon water jugs. These are the same kind of water bottles found on water coolers. (5-gallon jugs are robust enough to serve as a platform foundation when packing The Truck; smaller plastic containers tend to be prone to leaks and other natural disasters.) We have caps for these jugs, and you can still buy them used and empty at Urban Ore in Berkeley. Be sure to buy them as soon as possible as they tend to disappear as Burning Man approaches. Remember that you'll also need to clean & disinfect them thoroughly. You can bring the empty containers to Allison & Mig's and fill them there (with tap water) before loading them onto the truck. We will be filling them all up with tap water and not using filtered water this time. However, it will be fresh, Berkeley tap water filled from a drinking water hose so it will be good! If you want to bring special drinking water, please either carry it up in your vehicle, or make sure it's in a 5 gal water jug or bin, and label it with your name. We will be able to share the water communally once we get to the playa as long as everyone brings up the proper amount.

BOOZE

We ask that everyone bring up two beer or liquor items & two mixers to contribute to the communal Gooferville bar (for public consumption at our parties). The mixers can be oj, seltzer, club soda, cranberry, coke, or whatever you want. The beer or liquor items can be a 1.5 liter of liquor (bottom shelf's totally fine, even recommended) or a case (24 pack) of beer. Remember that all beer should be in cans. We will also need 200-400 cups if someone wants to get those (please indicate on the evite). We will want to wash and reuse them on the playa. As the above cheapo booze’ll be for the bar (we’ve got two big events destined to draw big drinkers), make sure to bring your own quality stash if you wish. There is a place on an evite I'll be sending out to indicate what communal liquor/beer/mixers you are bringing so everyone doesn't bring the same thing.

WHAT ELSE TO BRING

Is this your first year and you're not sure what it is essential to bring? This page has a list of "things you didn't know you'd need at Burning Man" as well as links to other packing lists: http://www.cieux.com/bm/things.html. There is also a really good collection of lists as well as playa recipes on the Santa Cruz Burner's site: http://www.burningbeach.com/packng/. If you need help sorting through the various lists, talk to one of us veterans....we can always send you our list.

REBAR

Just a reminder that you need to stake most shelters (e.g. tents, domes, shade structures etc.) down with rebar. You can find information on this here: http://www.burningman.com/preparation/event_survival/securing.html. Again, you can find this at Urban Ore and we will have tools to cut it at the Sunday building sessions at Allison & Mig's house as well as out on the playa.

INTERNET ACCESS ON THE PLAYA

Want to bring your laptop and wireless card so you can use the internet on the playa this year? We should have a good signal at Gooferville since we'll be so near center camp. Information on how to access it is here: http://www.eugeneweb.com/~bm/ibm.html.

GOOFERVILLE PERFORMANCE CALENDAR

We created a calendar of events for Gooferville, both to help us schedule things and to have a place to refer people to what's going on in our camp. It is located at http://www.my.calendars.net/gooferville/. You can add or modify events on the calendar by clicking on the number of the day you'd like to modify and entering the appropriate user ID & password (given in a previous email).

One not-so-nice thing about this calendar is that it won't let you have an event that crosses 12am (which many of ours do!). In those cases instead of adding an event time I just put the event time at the beginning of the title. You can see that the time on the karaoke events looks slightly different because of this. Also, you can categorize your events so that they appear as different colors. So far I set up the categories karaoke and party. Feel free to add more, but try not to make the calendar *too* much more colorful.

We'd like to try to schedule acts that follow our circus aesthetic in some way. If you'd like to schedule someone that requires power, make sure to talk to Boe, Mig, or Steve first. However, feel free to schedule acts that don't require power (e.g. mimes, comics, poi spinners) during the day.

WORK SHIFTS

We need everyone camping in Gooferville (not Goofer Heights, as they will be building their own camp) to sign up for a MINIMUM of two work shifts involving the setting up or tearing down of the camp. From the bottom of our hearts, those of us that will be working nearly every shift thank you for every additional shift you sign up for. As we’ll only have a skeleton crew building the entire camp early in the week, we will need the most people for the two tear down shifts on Sunday & especially Monday, so please sign up for one or both of them. Everyone still there on Monday should definitely sign up for the Monday shift. What’s a “shift”? Sunday: a few hours in the afternoon; Monday: all day til we have the entire camp cleared and loaded. You can sign up for these shifts on the evite.

LOADING THE TRUCK

We will be loading the truck on Friday, August 27th at Allison & Mig's. We need to pick up the truck on the Peninsula, pick up staging hardware at Holzmueller's in SF, then head over to Mig & Allison's for the remainder of the load (i.e., everyone’s goods). We want to start at Mig & Allison’s by 2pm, as we intend to head out early Saturday morning. Please bring things that are coming up in the truck on either Wed, Aug 25 or Thurs, Aug 26 in the evening, or Fri, Aug 27 by 2pm. If you are bringing a bike before Friday, make sure to bring a lock to lock it up in Allison & Mig's backyard. We recommend that you coordinate with Allison & Mig to bring things in the evening when they are home (phone number given in a previous email). PLEASE MAKE SURE TO LABEL EVERYTHING GOING UP IN THE TRUCK WITH YOUR NAME & ARRIVAL DATE! That way we can pack accordingly.

UNLOADING THE TRUCK

Everyone *must* pick up their items from the truck on Tuesday, Sept 7. Unloading of the truck will hopefully begin at approximately 11am at Allison & Mig's, so please join us if you have items in the truck and are able.

One thing that I believe we've decided this year is that anyone who wants to do decorations will pay for them themselves and get to keep them after the playa (or burn them). However, people who are interested in contributing to decorations but don't have ideas can obviously offer to help other people create and pay for their decorations. Let's all get into the spirit on this, shall we?

One obvious way to decorate is to create things to hang in the dome (and maybe from other structures). Last year I think Krista had a trapeze that we never used...do you still have that Krista? (probably just to hang something like a stuffed monkey on, not people...) It might also be cool to paint styrofoam balls from the craft store to ressemble planets. We could also make some sparkly stars, and maybe some more circusy stuff? Other ideas?

I would like to do an e-l wire project and know Linda & Mary buy a ton of that stuff...guys, do you have any extra that Mary might be able to bring up on Sunday for us to buy?

I can't go into all the details of why we delineated "good" and "bad" this way. I think it has more to do with the speeds. Sitting people tend to drive faster than standing ones. We really want speeds under 5 mph and we prefer that people use bikes or walk. Each
motorized vehicle that we permit helps to add to the loose dust on the playa. That means more dust in your food, camping gear, lungs, etc. (you get the picture)!
Also, does anyone have our red (I think Coleman) cooler?

Hey peoples,

After a long wait, you can stop holding your breath 'cause here's the minutes of our last meeting....

Thing we fought about:

Submitting our camp for approval and things needed before doing so.

Such as... Deciding on size requirements of our camp and the possibility of going to a park to check on size. ( I think we ended up figuring that out in the front yard/street of Allison and Mig's place...correct?)

Requesting that we be on a street and next to Lord Huckleberry's camp.

Figuring out how much power we will need.( Steve and I resently went to the "ranch" for a DPW work weekend. We made furniture for center camp and street signs. We also met alot of cool people who "are in the know" and it seems that the power really only gets to center camp, the immediate camps around c.camp, DPW , and earth guardians. Just because you are on the esplanade does not guarantee you power. )
Now we need to think about our generator and how about solar power?!

What is John getting for the camp? Did the boys meet with John on Wed. @ 12-1pm?
I.e., lights, ttrusses, etc.

Allison has agreed to build a paper mache clown monkey totem pole for the center of our camp.

For the side stages, there was talk of having light controllers for the go-go dancers (and having them blind folded??Boe's idea, I think.)

And most importantly...our party name. Is it "The Intergallactic 3 Ring Circus of Saturn or Uranus(he-he)? Steve thought we should wait to see what street BM assigns to us before we name the party.

"Boe, could you get me a beer while your up ?"

There was talk of hanging decorations from the overhead cables, i.e., planets, cloth, mirror balls, beheaded suffed animals, and beer can luminaries (would Coors light cans or PBR cans look more "spacey"?)
Some of the girls talked about getting a Decoration Commitee together for the camp. I think Allison and Krista have already started some "stuff". Allison, when can we get together again??

No astroturf this year, instead keep you eyes peeled for TAN CARPET any size(s) will do.

Deb has agreed to do everyones hair for Thursday's party. Quite an undertaking but have you hairspray, bobby pins , and ideas ready. Will this be the carpet or the drapes, Deb?

Boe has agreed to take on the responsibility to rent the truck with and E-track? and a lift. (Belinda says "thanks, sucker")

"Hand me that lighter, please."

Helen said "Everyone bring a spare car key! Or else." Belinda wants to be in charge of them. She also wants to throw them all in a bowl and have a swingers party.

Next on the agenda: Thursdays party.

We already went over name ideas now we just need performers and "circus stuff". Krista and Susan will be doing a fire performance along with some other fire acts (poss. a topless female group from LA...Suprise! Boe found these gals.) Also, Belinda had the idea of an Alien Burlesque which I thought would be really fun for the girls in our camp. And Lazer boy may make an appearnce. I hear he's really sexy!!!! Mig thought it would be really cool if the guys just wore silver lame thongs to the party.

Next: Main camp & Chill camp

Krista and Susan will supply a small dome for chill camp. Is this correct???

****There will be both a shower and kitchen located at both camps****

.Everyone brings there own food this year. There will NOT bea "dinner nite" to be responsible for but we were thinking about a community brunch or dinner on Thursday. We chose Thursday because we'll all be together preparing for the party anyway. Maybe this will be a "potluck" event. More to come.

"Who farted?"

We decided to use rectangular bins for "everything" Especially the ones that have a removeable top instead of the top that meets in the middle that we usually use. These tend to get too much playa dust in them. Keep an eye out for sales. Steve and I got 4 for $11 at Target.

"Krista, flip the sausages."

H2O is OK.

Now real important stuff: the camp's bar!!!

We decided on a joint camp bar/crappy guest bar with cheap booze and mixers for the party. Everyone should bring there own "good stuff" Boe said something about getting booze wholesale thru Bliss bar. Any more info on this , Boe? We also need a volunteer to coordinate this endeavor.

Steve thought it would be fun to have either a "alien beer bong" or "spacey beer shotguns" contest.

Misc: Keep your eyes peeled for babydoll parts for Krista Especailly babydoll heads...Creepy.

NostraBelinda says..."Prepare for Rain."

Hope to see you all at Belinda's on the 27th.

Helen (in the city but on the playa I'm Nancy)

stage design-wise, we're thinking a Willy Wonka meets Brasil sorta look.... mad scientist's lab. i've got all sorts of quality junk that i've been collecting, and should be able to get most of the materials for free/cheap.

the concept so far is something like:
"intercepting and translating music from outer space"
---our machine will do just that, or at least kinda look like it.

take a look at the concept drawing that's posted on the gooferville tribe..........

*we've procured a 12' diameter motorized rotating parabolic satellite dish. no kidding.
*the idea is to project video & lasers with it
* btw....the drawing is much much cleaner and less junky than i'd like....
* on either side of the stage will be some sort of metal pipe framework to hold the speaker horns, lights, and misc. junk.
* we're thinking of making giant paper mache speaker horns. very Dr. Suess. a couple of these will be built around our actual PA speakers.
* the blue circles on the drawing are supposed to be big light diffusers/gels. i'd like to take drum head hoops/hula hoops, etc. and cover them with plastic, with a light mounted behind each one.
* i would love to have some movement....big gears turning, etc...
--paper mache speaker horns built around oscillating fans.
* trigger interfaces that allow participants to create music with loops and samples.

we're thinking of keeping the color scheme pretty simple...blue, silver, and black mostly.

Steve is working on a laser with motorized mirrors
we have a video projector that should work

yup. now all we need is a bunch of time and money.

Folks,
to open things up, here's an overview of what's been discussed at our first meeting and other conversations....

We're thinking:
Providing a venue for interesting/atypical music (nothing too straight-ahead, live or DJ)
We can offer:
--stage/PA/lights/etc...
--somewhat organized events w/ show managers
--booze
--neato camp/stage design

various possible acts:
* live electronic
* wacky DJ's
* Karaoke
* Gooferman/spinoff
* in-camp DJ's (bring yer discs)
* other......

Ways people can contribute:
* help set up camp
* manage a show
* promote the shows
* a zillion other things

our 'big night' (thurs?) could be a sort of cabaret w/ everyone from the camp performing

We'll have two different camp locations....Gooferville and the chill/home camp. Gooferville being close to the Esplanade, and the chill camp being set back in the suburbs.

If anyone knows some good peoples that would be interested in being part of this, by all means send 'em this way.

Let's take it there, eh? whaddya say?
